This must surely be one of
Scotland’s most
picturesque castles situated, as it is, on a rocky promontory overlooking Loch
Duich. The island on which the castle stands is named after St Donan who lived
here around 600AD – Eilean Donan.
King Alexander II had a
castle built in 1220, which later became a stronghold of the Clan MacKenzie. In
1719 Government warships destroyed the castle after Spanish troops were
garrisoned there in support of the 1715 up-rising.
The castle that we see today
was rebuilt in the 1920’s to the original design. A souvenir photograph of this
most romantic castle will be amongst your most treasured memories of your time
in
Scotland.
