Known
as "The Outdoor Capital of the United Kingdom”, Fort William is one of the most popular towns
in the Scottish Highlands. It has an attractive location by the banks of Loch Linnhe at the southern end of the Great Glen.
The
town grew up around a fort, which was established here in 1655. It survived the
Jacobite up-risings of 1715 and 1745 but was finally demolished in 1864 to make
way for the coming of the railway.
Fort William sits in the shadow of
Ben Nevis, the tallest mountain in the United Kingdom.
